Our customer reached out to Quantum Power Inc., a premier electrical contractor in Vernon BC, seeking assistance to increase their main electrical service capacity and complete an electrical panel upgrade in Vernon BC.

Initial pre-construction steps necessary before commencing the project.

After assessment and discussion, the design team for BC Hydro’s overhead service in Vernon approved the upgrade. The upgrade will increase the existing 240 Volt – one hundred amp to 240 Volt – two hundred amps.

The subsequent step involved designing a completely new 240 Volt – 200 Amp service from BC Hydro’s transformer to the new 200A electrical panel upgrade location.

Due to the complexity of the project, Bar Engineering reviewed the service design specifications and provided recommendations as needed. We will learn more about this shortly.

With approval from BC Hydro, and the Bar Engineering’s report, a permit was issued to Quantum Power from Technical Safety B. C. Our most experienced electrician in Vernon BC was tasked with the project. The on-site project begins.

Day 1

The newly installed pole complies with the road crossing height regulations, standing at thirty-five feet. The overhead connection point is installed on the pole before its set in the ground, making the process quicker and safer for our power electricians.

Meter/Main Breaker/Splitter/Mast

Next, we installed the outdoor-rated meter base, main breaker, and splitter combination enclosure. Additionally, we constructed the conduit mast to accommodate the incoming power lines.

Opting for a combination enclosure also presents a neater, more streamlined look. By attaching this all-in-one unit directly to the pole, we eliminate the need for bulky service equipment mounted on the house, preserving the home’s exterior while centralizing the electrical installation.

BC Hydro’s meter is in the top compartment, the 200-amp main breaker is in the middle, and the splitter is below. The enclosure is kept locked at all times for safety and equipment protection when unattended.

By the end of Day 1 our Vernon electricians set the pole, mounted the combination enclosure to the pole, and built a mast to accommodate BC Hydro’s overhead service conductors.

Equipment Wiring

The wiring of the mast, combination enclosure and system grounding is next.

The incoming power lines are terminated in the meter base, then wired to the 200-amp main breaker, which feeds the splitter. Terminations are torqued to specifications and installed with an antioxidant compound for extended life.

Grounding

The electrical system grounding utilizes a galvanized plate buried two feet deep and terminated in the main breaker compartment.

Excavation

Excavating to a depth of thirty inches and laying the parallel cables in a bed of sand is required. This reduces the chance of damage from frost heaving. Parallel cables in a trench must maintain eight inches of vertical separation and never cross. Once the cable is embedded in the sand, caution tape is placed over the sand. The trench is then back filled to grade.

Day 3

To meet our reputation as a reliable local electrical contractor in Vernon BC, we ensure all details are meticulously implemented and delivery of a safe efficient electrical system is our goal. Parallel cable installation requires this level of commitment.

In this rural location, the homeowners requested underground cables from the combination enclosure to the 200-amp panel. With the distance of the cable run at 320 feet, our lead electricians in Vernon designed a parallel cable system.

Here is a quick explanation of why we used parallel cables:

For every one hundred feet, cable size must increase by one to compensate for voltage losses on long runs. At 320 feet, this means the cable needs to be three sizes larger, exceeding 200-amp equipment limits.

To solve this, we divide the 200-amp power into two 100-amp cables at the combination enclosure, then recombine them at the 200-amp panel.

Day 4

Installing The Panel

After reviewing the amount of load currently carried by the panel, plus the additions of a pool and outdoor kitchen our lead electrician in Vernon BC decided on a Siemens 240 volt – 200-amp eighty circuit panel. This choice not only ensures adequate capacity for all existing and future electrical needs but also provides a high degree of flexibility for circuit expansion.

Day 5

Quality Control & De-energized Pre-inspection Testing

Once the panel is securely mounted and wired, a comprehensive de-energized inspection was performed, followed by a successful test of all connections. This critical stage marked a major milestone in the project, setting the foundation for the rest of the electrical system’s completion.

The installation process included verifying all terminations and torque settings, as well as labeling each circuit clearly to streamline any future maintenance or upgrades.
Final quality control was conducted by our lead electrician in Vernon BC in anticipation of an electrical inspection. Once deemed compliant the inspection passed, and Quantum Power submitted a connection request to BC Hydro.

Day 6

Connection Day

A two-person crew from BC Hydro’s overhead service for Vernon arrived in the morning and installed a new 200-amp overhead road crossing service line. A meter was installed on the meter base and the final connection was made. With the electrical system energized, our Vernon electricians thoroughly assessed all circuits with no issues.

An onsite meeting with the owners provided an opportunity for our lead Vernon electrician to inform the owners of proper operation of the new electrical panel upgrade in Vernon BC. A final inspection of the energized system was passed, and our favourite Vernon electrical job was complete.

After assessment and discussion with BC Hydro’s overhead service, Quantum Power was approved to increase the existing 240 Volt – one hundred amp to 240 Volt – two hundred amps.
